Job Description
Responsible for laying out and erecting structural steel and sheet metal in order to build metal structures, including conventional steel structures or pre-engineered metal buildings; and precast concrete panels. Perform tasks involving physical labor at building, highway, and heavy construction projects, and demolition sites. May operate hand tools of all types. May assist other craft workers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
- Build and install iron or steel girders, columns, and other construction materials to form building, bridges, and other structures.
- Cut, position, and bolt down steel bars to reinforce concrete.
- Repair old infrastructure.
- Erect steel frames.
- Install metal wall or roof panels.
- Direct operation of cranes to move and position structural steel, reinforcing bars, precast and other materials onto and around the construction site.
- Connect steel columns, beams, and girders using welded or bolted connections.
- Drill holes into steel for bolts.
- Number steel according to assembly instructions.
- Unload, stack and organize steel and precast materials.
- Attach rigging to steel and then to crane.
- Hoist steel into place in the framework.
- Position steel with connecting bars and spud wrenches.
- Work with driftpins to align the holes between the steel and the framework.
- Use plumb bobs, levels, and laser equipment to verify alignment.
- Set reinforcing bars into forms to hold concrete.
- Fasten bars together with wire.
- Place spacers under and between rebar.
- Cut bars by shears, saws, and torches.
- Reinforce concrete with welded wire fabric.
- Install stairs and handrails, ensuring all pieces are properly fitted and complete repairs as necessary.
- Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones.
- Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment and material.
- Position, join, align, and seal structural components, such as concrete wall sections and pipes.
- Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where work will be preformed.
- Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
- Lubricate, clean, and repair machinery, equipment, and tools.
- Provide assistance to other craft workers when needed.
- Salvage useful materials where appropriate.
